True onyx is a variety of chalcedony, the microcrystalline form of quartz, characterized by parallel banding. Black Banded Onyx therefore refers most accurately to black-and-light banded chalcedony with a hardness near that of quartz. However, the commercial name 'onyx' is also frequently misapplied to banded calcite, so identification matters.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Chalcedony onyx forms when silica-rich fluids deposit successive microscopic quartz layers in cavities, fractures, or sedimentary environments. Parallel compositional or color changes create the banding. Natural black onyx is less common than dyed black chalcedony, and some 'banded onyx' sold decoratively is actually calcite or aragonite.
