SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Gilsonite is a naturally occurring solid bitumen/asphaltite—an organic geological material derived from petroleum rather than a crystalline mineral. It is black, lightweight, brittle, and typically shows a shiny conchoidal fracture when freshly broken. 'Gilsonite' is also a registered trade name; uintaite is a historical mineralogical term.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
The best-known deposits occur as near-vertical veins cutting Tertiary sedimentary rocks of the Uinta Basin in Utah and Colorado. Geological studies interpret the material as petroleum-derived hydrocarbons that migrated into fractures and then lost volatile components, leaving solid asphaltite veins. The Uinta Basin deposits are among the world's most important examples.

Asphaltite is traditionally associated with grounding, protection, endurance, and confronting material reality directly. Its origin as transformed petroleum gives it symbolic themes of pressure, concentration, and converting ancient organic matter into a dense final form.
