Apache Tears are naturally rounded or nodular pieces of obsidian, a silica-rich volcanic glass. They are commonly black to dark brown and may appear translucent smoky brown when held against strong light. Because obsidian is glass rather than a crystalline mineral, it has no true crystal structure.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Apache Tears form in association with silica-rich volcanic eruptions, particularly within perlitic volcanic deposits. Individual obsidian nodules can survive within altered or hydrated volcanic glass while the surrounding material changes more extensively. Well-known occurrences are found in the southwestern United States, especially Arizona and New Mexico.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Apache Tears are traditionally associated with grief, emotional protection, grounding, and compassionate release. Their cultural trade name has become closely linked with mourning and moving through loss without suppressing emotion. Practitioners often use them as a gentler form of obsidian symbolism—supporting honest emotional processing while maintaining a sense of safety and connection to the present.
