Ammonites are extinct marine cephalopods known from fossilized, usually planispirally coiled shells. They are fossils rather than minerals. Original shell aragonite may be preserved in some specimens, while others are replaced or infilled by calcite, pyrite, silica, or sedimentary minerals during fossilization.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Ammonites lived from the Devonian Period until the end-Cretaceous mass extinction about 66 million years ago. Their shells settled into marine sediments, where burial and diagenesis created fossils that are now found in sedimentary rocks around the world. Because ammonites evolved rapidly, many species are important index fossils for dating marine strata.

Ammonite is traditionally associated with ancient wisdom, cycles, continuity, and personal evolution.
