Allophane is a poorly crystalline to amorphous hydrous aluminum silicate rather than a conventionally well-ordered crystal mineral. Its composition is variable, and it commonly occurs as earthy, waxy, botryoidal, or crust-like material in white, pale blue, green, brown, or colorless tones.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Allophane commonly forms through intense weathering and hydrothermal alteration of volcanic ash and aluminosilicate rocks. It is an important component of many volcanic soils and can also occur in fractures and altered zones associated with ore deposits. Because of its very fine structure and variable hydration, its physical properties are less uniform than those of well-crystallized minerals.
