Afghanite is a rare feldspathoid mineral of the cancrinite group, typically blue to colorless, with a complex sodium-calcium-potassium aluminosilicate sulfate-chloride composition. It crystallizes in the trigonal system and may form short prismatic crystals or granular masses. Its vivid blue color is one of its most recognizable features.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Afghanite was first described from the Sar-e-Sang district of Badakhshan, Afghanistan, where it occurs in metamorphosed limestone associated with lazurite, sodalite, calcite, diopside, and other minerals of the lapis-lazuli assemblage. It has also been reported from Italy, Russia, Tajikistan, and several other localities.
