SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Actinolite is a calcium-magnesium-iron amphibole mineral in the tremolite–actinolite solid-solution series. Its idealized chemistry is commonly written Ca₂(Mg,Fe²⁺)₅Si₈O₂₂(OH)₂. Increasing iron content generally deepens its green color. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system and commonly forms bladed, fibrous, radiating, or columnar aggregates.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Actinolite is characteristic of low- to medium-grade metamorphic rocks and commonly forms during metamorphism of magnesium- and calcium-rich rocks. It occurs in greenschist-facies assemblages, altered mafic rocks, skarns, and amphibolites, and may occur as inclusions in quartz. Important occurrences are found worldwide, including Canada, the United States, Brazil, Russia, China, and parts of Europe.
