SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Hematite is iron oxide, Fe₂O₃, and one of the most important iron ore minerals. It crystallizes in the trigonal system and occurs as metallic gray crystals, red-brown earthy masses, botryoidal 'kidney ore,' plates, and dense massive material. Its diagnostic streak is consistently red to reddish brown even when the exterior appears silver-black.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Hematite forms in hydrothermal veins, banded iron formations, sedimentary iron deposits, volcanic environments, metamorphic rocks, and weathering zones. It can develop through oxidation of magnetite and other iron-bearing minerals. Ancient banded iron formations preserve major changes in Earth's early oxygen cycle.
