Chinese Writing Stone, also called Chinese Writing Rock, is a porphyritic igneous rock rather than a single mineral. Its dark fine-grained groundmass contains elongated pale feldspar crystals whose intersecting shapes resemble written characters. The contrast is a product of igneous texture: larger crystals formed before the remaining melt cooled more rapidly around them.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
The stone develops when feldspar begins crystallizing within magma before the rest of the melt solidifies. Those early crystals become suspended as phenocrysts in a finer dark matrix, producing the script-like pattern after the rock is cut and polished. Well-known material has been collected in California and Nevada, with related porphyritic decorative stones also reported elsewhere.
